infographic
Plastic waste in the world's oceans is a problem for the habitat of marine animals. Marine animals and seabird species mistake plastic waste for food or become entangled in fishing nets that are thrown overboard.
This infographic is intended to show the enormous damage that plastic causes to the animal world. In my illustration, I show two possible paths for a PET bottle after use. A brief moment decides the path of the PET bottle: the path through the recycling plant or the path of almost endless destruction.
I started by researching the problem of plastic waste in the world's oceans and its impact on wildlife. Based on these findings, I developed the concept for the infographic, which shows the two possible paths of a PET bottle after use.
Once I had gathered my information, I started brainstorming the design and created a mood board. This was used to gather visual inspiration and determine the style and colour scheme of the infographic to communicate the message clearly and easily.
After several iterations, I decided on a more abstract illustration style. In addition, I chose bright red as an accent color to emphasize the devastating path of a PET bottle in the sea. By hovering over a dot on the left-hand side of the information graphic (plastic in the sea), an image appears showing how animals become entangled in the plastic or swallow it. I use real images in order to touch the reader even more and to emphasize the extent of the impact of plastic waste on the animal world.
I wrote supporting texts to accompany the graphics. These texts explain in detail the process of how a PET bottle is recycled after use and the positive impact this has on the environment. Clear and concise descriptions convey to viewers how important it is to dispose of and recycle waste correctly.
